Academics & Student Affairs

Our Academic and Student Affairs office provide services to support the Board of Regents strategic plan including academic programming and curriculum, system enrollment services, academic and student information services support, FAFSA Completion, workforce development and programming, distance learning including the SD-SARA, systemwide scholarship management, academic institutional research, statewide collaboration with the Department of Education, Board of Technical Education, and the Department of Labor and Regulations, and policy and planning. Our staff work with the Regental campuses on academic initiatives and collaborations to promote postsecondary education in South Dakota. The Regental system is committed to working closely with all federal and state agencies and private enterprise to further develop collaboration across the state.

Academic Affairs Council

BOR Policy supports the collaborative efforts of the six public universities in academic affairs.  Therefore, the vice and associate vice presidents from each of the universities and the Regental office make up the membership of this committee. This committee serves to evaluate Board Policy, academic affairs procedures and guidelines, and partners in academic strategy for the system.

Student Affairs Council

Faculty Affairs

Communication is a cornerstone for the Board of Regents as they partner with faculty.  To ensure an effective communication strategy, the Board of Regents holds a faculty forum prior to each Board Meeting with faculty leadership.  In addition, through policy, faculty make up the discipline councils to share and discuss academic collaborative efforts and special initiatives.

Areas of Focus

In 2014, the state of South Dakota entered into an agreement to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA).  South Dakota’s agreement is through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), which is one of the four regional education compacts who administer SARA.

SDBOR is the State Portal Entity (SPE) for SD-SARA and administers SARA within the state of South Dakota. BOR’s responsibilities as portal agency include accepting, reviewing, and submitting applications from South Dakota institutions wishing to participate in SARA, reviewing compliance with SARA policies, serving as liaison with SPEs in other states, and accepting and investigating student complaints that are appealed to BOR.

NC-SARA establishes a state-level reciprocity process that supports the nation in its efforts to increase educational attainment by making state authorization more efficient, effective, and uniform. Membership in NC-SARA is voluntary for both states and institutions. Once a state becomes a member of NC-SARA, all degree-granting post-secondary institutions from all sectors (public colleges & universities; independent institutions, both non-profit and for-profit) accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education are eligible to participate in SARA. Institutions that participate in SARA are authorized in all states who are Members of NC-SARA. ​
